Summer Learning Program

The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) celebrated another successful Summer Learning Program, which ran from July 2 to July 19, 2024. This three-week program, hosting nearly 300 students at 16 different sites across the district, offered an engaging and supportive educational experience for students. Sessions took place in-person from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., focusing on enhancing literacy and numeracy skills through the integration of real-world learning and the arts.

Designed to assist students experiencing achievement gaps and those facing social and economic challenges, the program tailored instruction based on school-based data, ensuring that each student's individual needs were met effectively. More than 30 dedicated teachers and support staff helped make learning fun and memorable.

Highlights from the program:

Bridgewood Public School

At Bridgewood Public School, students tested a new computer game, enhancing their technology and logical thinking skills. They also enjoyed reading a book together outside, fostering a love for literature and the outdoors.

Central Public School

Students at Central Public School engaged in a creative and hands-on activity where they built sturdy towers using marshmallows. This fun challenge promoted teamwork, problem-solving skills, and the application of mathematical concepts.

DevCore

DevCore students showcased their Real-World Learning projects, including a song and a virtual story, to their families. These students received certificates for their outstanding achievements, celebrating their creativity and dedication.

Morrisburg Public School

Students at Morrisburg Public School immersed themselves in reading, writing, and math activities, diving deep into the history and ecology of the St. Lawrence River. They learned about the area's flooding in the 1950s and tackled current water pollution issues. Engaging literacy and math activities using UFLI helped students master ‘IR’ and ‘UR’ words. Exciting visits from the Coast Guard and the River Institute made this summer an unforgettable experience.

Thousand Islands Elementary School

At Thousand Islands Elementary School, students had the pleasure of spending time with a special guest from Song Collab Studio. Together, they created their very own TIES Timberwolves theme song, integrating music into their learning experience and fostering a sense of school spirit and creativity.

Westminster Public School

At Westminster Public School, students worked diligently on their math skills and used the literacy centre to practice reading, word sounds, and commonly misspelled words. This focused practice helped strengthen their foundational literacy skills.
