Labour Relations Update - CUPE Job Action
Labour Relations Update - CUPE Job Action
Posted on 09/26/2019

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As you may have heard, the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) has announced job action in response to the status of bargaining at the provincial level. This job action could take place as early as Monday September 30. This is job action that affects all school boards across Ontario. It is a result of the provincial dialogue between the Ministry of Education and CUPE. CUPE and the province have recently announced that they will continue bargaining on September 28 and 29, 2019.

CUPE represents several UCDSB employee groups including custodial/maintenance staff, clerical staff, educational assistants, early childhood educators, library workers, and information technology staff.

The CUPE’s work-to-rule campaign contains several measures intended to mainly target school and board administration, as opposed to directly impacting parents and students.

Currently, the UCDSB is reviewing the job action directive from CUPE provincial to its members to determine the impact on school and work site operations. Please know that UCDSB schools will remain open to staff and students during this job action.

Student safety remains our top priority and we are confident that even with the constraints associated with these job actions, your children will remain safe in our schools. We are committed to ensuring that your child’s learning is uninterrupted and to that end, we remain engaged in bargaining with all employee groups at the local level. We are heartened by the progress that has been achieved provincially with other unions and are optimistic these issues will be settled soon.

We appreciate that timely communication is important to you, and we will strive to provide you with additional details on the job action as soon as we can. We will communicate through our schools, via My Family Room, and when necessary, through social media. If you are not signed up to receive email via My Family Room, please take the opportunity to sign up now:

Thank you for your support,

The Upper Canada District School Board
