UCDSB Wildlife Rescue

January 9, 2020 (Upper Canada, ON) – Multiple schools in the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) have jumped at the opportunity to help the Australian wildlife affected by the catastrophic wildfires.

On Wednesday, Jan. 8, Linklater Public School shared on social media that students will be collecting money for the Humane Society International to support their Australian Animal Rescue Fund. Linklater PS encouraged other UCDSB schools to join them and by the end of the day, Pineview Public School, Thousand Islands Elementary School and Athens District High School were also on board. The elementary schools will be fundraising until January 17 while Athens DHS will fundraise following exams, which end on January 30.

“The response from our community in the short time we have advertised this initiative is incredible,” says Jennifer McMaster, Principal of Linklater Public School. “People are so happy that we are doing this.”

Rockland District High School’s We Club is spearheading their own efforts to help the Australian animals by selling candygrams, baked goods and pizza. They plan to donate the funds raised to the World Wildlife Fund, Port Macquarie Koala Hospital and the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park.

TR Leger School of Adult, Alternative and Continuing Education’s Prescott campus took a different approach and started a sewing project to make pouches for young kangaroos.

“These initiatives show the character and caring hearts of our UCDSB staff and students,” says Chair John McAllister. “I’m proud of our staff and students for taking on these causes.”
