Brockville Students Reveal their Aquatarium Interactive Displays

June 7, 2019 (Brockville, ON) - Approximately 160 Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) students from four Brockville elementary schools gathered at the Aquatarium at Tall Ships Landing on June 6 to showcase their year-long experiential learning projects.

The community-based partnership between the UCDSB and Aquatarium gave students the unique opportunity to develop interactive panels that would accompany five different exhibits at the discovery center. Carleton Place High School’s Communication Technology class was responsible for creating the panel templates and printing the final products.

Commonweath Public School’s Grade 5 and 6 classes focused on Brockville and region’s bird species. Toniata Public School’s Grade 3 and 4 classes built their presentation on the St. Lawrence as a habitat. Vanier Public School’s Grade 5 and 6 classes showcased the aquatic species that live in the St. Lawrence River. Westminster Public School’s Grades 5 and 6 classes formed their project around biodiversity, the ecosystem and invasive species, and their Grade 2 class titled their project “Amazing Animals”.

Each class worked as a team throughout the school year to research their topic and create a panel filled with related information, student artwork, photographs and QR codes that can be scanned to reveal additional presentations, video and audio files.

“These projects provided students with rich, authentic and engaging learning experiences,” explained Brad O’Neil, Principal of Teaching and Learning at the UCDSB. “We are so proud of the work of both our students and teachers.”

“It’s obvious that a lot of perseverance and dedication went into each project,” added Nancy Hanna, Director of Educational Programs at the Aquatarium. “We are excited to have our guests interact with the panels.”

Hanna presented each student with a certificate of appreciation and a free pass to visit their project at a later date.
